Epistem Goes to Campus “Young People as Drivers of Remote Sensing-Based Landscape Management”

Epistem Goes to Campus is a series of outreach and learning activities designed to introduce remote sensing-based landscape mapping technology to academics in Indonesia. The program is part of the Epistem initiative, which promotes data-driven decision-making to support sustainable landscape management.

In the context of growing global climate challenges, the need for accurate, open, and accessible spatial data has become increasingly important. Through this program, students and lecturers are introduced to Luma (Land Use Mapping for All), a web-based mapping platform that enables users to create land cover and land use maps from satellite imagery easily, without requiring specialized software or programming skills.

Beyond its role as a learning platform, the activity also opens opportunities for collaboration through the Karsa Bentala Community and encourages student participation in the national mapping competition, “#StoryBehindTheMap: Mapping Innovation for Nature-Based Climate Solutions.”

Objectives

• Introduce Epistem and the Luma platform as data-based tools for landscape mapping.
• Encourage student participation in the #StoryBehindTheMap competition.
• Strengthen the capacity and collaboration network of young people in the use of geospatial technology.

Participants

The program involves more than 170 participants in South Sulawesi and hundreds of students from universities in East Nusa Tenggara and South Sumatra, representing study programs in forestry, geography, environmental engineering, agriculture, and related fields.
