“Luma” Mapping Platform Launching Workshop

Data Democratization for Sustainable Landscapes:

Mapathon Gotong Royong for Collaborative Land Use and Land Cover Mapping

Event Group

ABOUT THE EVENT

Activity Summary

The Data Democratization for Sustainable Landscapes workshop is part of the Epistem (Evolving Participatory Information System for Nature-based Climate Solutions) initiative, which aims to strengthen sustainable landscape management through a collaborative and participatory mapping approach. This activity is based on the need for accurate, open, and easily accessible land use and land cover data to support forest restoration, prevent deforestation, and achieve Indonesia's climate targets, including the 2030 FOLU Net Sink agenda.

Through a collaboration between IIASA, BRIN, CIFOR-ICRAF, and WRI Indonesia, Epistem has developed a web-based mapping platform called Luma Land Use Mapping for All, an open-source online mapping platform that has been tested with communities of practitioners in several regions in Indonesia and will be launched during this workshop.

The workshop will combine strategic presentations, technology demonstrations, hands-on practice, and map discussion sessions to build a shared understanding of modular mapping, shared reference data management, and strengthening collaborative networks across stakeholders. Commemorating National Awakening Day, the Epistem initiative aspires to instill the spirit of this national movement milestone into its vision of “data democratization for sustainable landscapes.” This moment marks a revival of collective stewardship in land use governance through mapping gotong royong—bringing together practitioners, government, and local communities to advance nature-based climate solutions.

PRESS RELEASE

Mapping Technology That Connects People, Epistem Launches the Luma Mapping Platform

Jakarta, May 20, 2026

Efforts toward sustainable landscape management, forest restoration, and deforestation prevention require spatial data that is accurate, open, and easily accessible to various stakeholders. To address this need, Epistem (Evolving Participatory Information System for Nature-based Climate Solutions) took the initiative to launch the online mapping platform “Luma” (Land Mapping for All) during a national workshop held in conjunction with National Awakening Day on Wednesday, May 20, at the A. A. Maramis Building in Jakarta.

Under the theme “Revitalising Data, Preserving Land Cover,” this workshop serves as a significant milestone in marking the resurgence of national data sovereignty through cross-institutional collaboration involving practitioners, government officials, and local communities. Using a participatory approach, this event aims to introduce the Luma platform, build a national collaborative network for mapping land use and land cover, and initiate a “map forum” to strengthen synergies in support of Indonesia’s climate change mitigation agenda.
